RTA Adds Lane Near Dubai Mall Metro to Ease Sheikh Zayed Road Traffic
RTA expands Sheikh Zayed Road near Dubai Mall Metro, cutting travel time by up to 10% during peak hours.
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed a significant road widening initiative on Sheikh Zayed Road, increasing its capacity by 17 percent and reducing peak-hour travel times by up to 10 percent. This project focuses on a 2-kilometer stretch near the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall Metro station, where the number of lanes has been expanded from six to seven.
This upgrade is part of a broader series of traffic enhancement projects along Sheikh Zayed Road, one of the busiest highways in Dubai. The improvements aim to alleviate congestion, enhance connectivity with adjacent road networks, and support the city’s rising transportation demands.
The expanded section serves thousands of daily commuters traveling to major business and tourist destinations, including Dubai World Trade Center, Dubai International Financial Center (DIFC), the Museum of the Future, Al Karama, Al Jafiliya, and Al Mankhool. The RTA highlighted that these enhancements will also improve access during large exhibitions and international events held at the Dubai World Trade Center, facilitating smoother travel between commercial hubs and residential areas.
In addition to the lane expansion, the RTA recently inaugurated a two-lane, 1,000-meter-long second-level bridge as part of the World Trade Centre Roundabout Development project. This bridge accommodates up to 3,000 vehicles per hour and serves motorists traveling from Sheikh Zayed Road toward Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street, heading in the direction of Al Karama and Deira.
The new bridge has notably improved traffic flow by reducing travel time through the roundabout from six minutes to just one minute, easing congestion in this busy area.
These infrastructure projects reflect Dubai’s ongoing commitment to expanding its road network, enhancing mobility, and addressing the challenges posed by the city’s population and economic growth.
