Sharjah authorities have detained a truck driver after he attempted to obscure his vehicle's licence plate by covering it with mud. The driver was found violating traffic regulations by entering areas restricted to heavy vehicles.

The arrest followed the detection of the vehicle through an advanced traffic monitoring system equipped with surveillance cameras and digital technologies. This system enabled specialized teams to track the truck and carry out field investigations leading to the driver's apprehension.

Sharjah Police emphasized that any efforts to conceal vehicle licence plates or evade traffic enforcement systems will be strictly addressed. The emirate employs a comprehensive regulatory framework to oversee all roadways and ensure compliance with traffic laws, prioritizing road safety.

Authorities have urged all motorists, particularly drivers of heavy vehicles, to follow designated routes, adhere to permitted times and lanes, and comply with traffic regulations. These measures are intended to reduce violations and accidents, thereby enhancing safety for all road users.

Under Article 34 of Federal Decree-Law No. (14) of 2024 On Traffic Regulation, individuals who distort, obliterate, or alter licence plate data face imprisonment and a minimum fine of Dh20,000. The law specifies penalties for:

• Forging or imitating licence plates or using forged plates.
• Altering licence plate data while using the plate.
• Allowing use of a licence plate known to be defaced or altered.
• Transferring licence plates between vehicles without approval from the Licensing Authority.
• Installing licence plates in violation of legal provisions.

Sharjah Police continue to enforce these regulations to maintain road safety and uphold traffic laws across the emirate.
