In the first six months of 2026, Abu Dhabi's Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) cleaned more than 205,000 kilometers of roads, removing nearly 11,000 tonnes of litter as part of a comprehensive effort to maintain the city's public spaces.

The total road cleaning distance reached 205,972 kilometers, accounting for 75 percent of the 274,735 kilometers covered throughout 2025. Teams from Abu Dhabi City, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra municipalities worked across 1,661 priority locations, including 102 residential neighborhoods, main road corridors, cycle tracks, bus stops, pedestrian bridges, tunnels, and areas surrounding community facilities.

Efforts focused on areas where litter, dust, and debris impaired visibility, accessibility, or safe movement for drivers, pedestrians, and public transport users, including residential streets and routes connecting villas.

Rashed Al Kaabi, Acting Executive Director of Operations Support at DMT, emphasized that maintaining cleanliness on this scale requires coordinated planning, operations, and community reporting. He noted that road cleaning is part of broader public space maintenance rather than a routine task, and as Abu Dhabi expands, municipal services must become more targeted and responsive. Data from the cleaning operations helps identify areas with increased pressure and guides resource allocation.

During this period, municipal teams removed a combined total of 126,740 tonnes of waste and debris alongside 10,960 tonnes of litter. They also responded to 874 public reports concerning road cleanliness.

In response to seasonal conditions such as wind, dust, and peak summer activity, DMT intensified cleaning efforts at 387 locations, focusing on areas affected by sand accumulation, heavy foot traffic, and increased vehicle movement.

The large-scale cleaning operation is supported by DMT's smart cleaning fleet, which includes over 500 AI-powered vehicles equipped with Internet of Things (IoT) tracking and 360-degree cameras. This fleet operates across more than 36,000 square kilometers and completes approximately 50,000 tasks daily. The technology has contributed to reducing fuel consumption and improving response times throughout the emirate.

The results from the first half of 2026 will inform ongoing cleaning strategies, with teams continuing to prioritize heavily used roads, residential zones, and locations with frequent cleanliness reports.
