UAE to Experience Gradual Cooling Despite Continued Summer Heat After Suhail Star Rise
Following the rise of the Suhail star on August 24, UAE residents can expect a slow easing of summer heat with rising humidity and occasional hot spells.
The United Arab Emirates is moving past the peak of its traditional summer heat period but residents should anticipate a gradual transition rather than an immediate drop in temperatures. The Suhail star, also known as Canopus, is expected to rise on August 24 and is traditionally seen as a seasonal marker indicating the beginning of cooler conditions.
Ibrahim Al Jarwan, chairman of the Emirates Astronomy Society, explained that the days following the star’s appearance will bring a steady moderation in temperatures rather than a sudden change. "We are not talking about cold weather," he said, "but people will feel a change in the atmosphere and a moderation in conditions." The shift is expected to become more noticeable around the time of Suhail’s rise, roughly 10 days away.
Despite a likely decline in daytime temperatures, increased humidity levels could make the heat feel more intense at times. The UAE recently experienced the peak of its summer heat, known locally as Ayam Al Ghayth, which typically lasts about six weeks from early July to around August 10. During this period, temperatures soared above 51°C on August 5, with nighttime lows reaching up to 35°C.
As the mercury begins to fall, humidity is expected to rise, which may cause residents to continue feeling discomfort despite lower thermometer readings. Al Jarwan noted that humid summer air contains significantly more moisture than humid air in cooler months, making it more exhausting. For example, at 40°C and 80 percent humidity, a cubic meter of air holds about 50 grams of water, compared to less than 15 grams at 20°C with the same relative humidity.
September and October are usually the most humid months in the UAE. The increased moisture could also lead to early morning fog and dew, with initial signs appearing from late August and becoming more frequent through September.
Short bursts of intense heat, known as Zafarat Al Qayth, may still occur after the peak summer period. These late summer heat spikes do not change the overall cooling trend but can temporarily raise temperatures before conditions stabilize around the autumn equinox on September 23.
Following the equinox, evenings are expected to become more comfortable, though cooler daytime temperatures will take longer to arrive, with more noticeable relief anticipated in November and continuing into mid-December.
While the Suhail star itself does not influence the weather, its rising has long been used as a reliable seasonal indicator in the Arabian calendar, marking the transition away from peak summer heat. Al Jarwan emphasized that traditional references to constellations such as Virgo, Libra, and Scorpio serve as time markers rather than weather influencers, roughly corresponding to the months of September, October, and November.
